Great news: my publisher wants another Cornish mystery!

Great cover: the UK edition of the next Daisy mystery. Coming in April 2011 in US and UK. You can see a larger version here.

Not so great news: Trillian came in from the garden absolutely covered in tiny burrs--forget-me-not, I think. Imagine trying to get them out of that tail! Brushing won't do it. I've been picking them out by hand at intervals all day.

In my peregrinations up and down the West Coast, talking about and signing A Colourful Death, a number of people have commented on the charming picture of a Cornish village on the cover. I have to tell them it looks nothing like any Cornish village I've ever seen. Most of the building appear to be built of brick, a material seldom used in Cornwall, with its wealth of granite and slate. As you can see in this pic of Boscastle, natural stone, sometimes whitewashed, is the building material of choice.

Assuming the cover art is intended to represent one of Nick's slashed paintings, I have to conclude he must have been visiting another part of the country--Dorset perhaps--when he painted it!

If you don't know Marshal Zeringue's p. 69 and p. 99 tests, check out my results for the former at <http://page69test.blogspot.com/2010/07/colourful-death.html>, and then look at those of other authors. They're amazing!

Half the fun of a multi-author signing is chatting with your fellow-authors. Seen here, Ann Herrick, author of many children's and YA books, and Suzy, author of a book about the history of Eugene's Saturday Market (pic taken by LJ Sellers, author of a mystery series set in Eugene--first book The Sex Club).

The other half of the fun--well, call it 45%, leaving a bit for the fun of having people buy one's books--is just watching people. My favourite sights: A father dancing past to the beat of the band with his baby in his arms; Darth Vader (or was he a Jedi Knight?) coaxing a small scared child--first he went down on one knee, then a high five, then shake hands, and at last into the crook of his armoured arm for a photo. Good job his armour was white and it wasn't too hot a day or he'd have cooked!

(The reason my hand is raised to Ann's chin is not that I was socking her one but I'd been trying to tidy my hair for the pic. It was very windy.)
